What’s actually in OTHER skin care products?

We have been doing a lot of research on ingredients in other skincare products and masks.  Here are some pictures of some very well known skincare line product ingredients (names are hidden, but we have seen this product in many spas and medical offices around Calgary):

As you can see, there are a huge list of ingredients you can’t even pronounce in this product!  As there are so many, I am only going to look at one main ingredient which is tocopherol acetate. This ingredient is basically a form of vitamin E created in a laboratory. Manufacturers take a natural form of vitamin E and add acetic acid to it.   The word “acid” means just what you’d think—it’s corrosive, and attacks the skin. Why would they put that in a skincare product?  Well, it is cheaper and makes the product last longer. Adding this type of acid to the vitamin E makes the product last longer on the shelves which means more money.

Some studies show that this ingredient is safe for use in cosmetics in low dose, but it can encourage the carcinogenic effects of UV rays.  When tested on animals, high doses of this ingredient have been found to cause tumor formation. This isn’t a concern if you’re using only a little of the ingredient, but the main concern is the buildup over time. Simply put; the necessary safety studies on this ingredient have just not been done when people are using this product for several times a day over many years.  Again, this is just the one ingredient I looked at on this particular product and you can see there are many more.

What’s actually in ANOTHER skin care product?

This is just one ingredient in a jelly mask that I have seen many spas using. This peel off jelly mask typically goes over the entire face and over the eyes and contains some interesting ingredients.  Tetrasodium pyrophosphate is a product used in household and industrial cleaners.  The first aid protocol for this product when it gets in contact with eyes is to immediately flush with large amounts of water for at least 15 minutes. It also shouldn’t be inhaled or come into contact with skin.  Strange considering it is an ingredient in a face mask.

Please check the ingredients before using any skin care products. Even those that say “natural” or “organic” should always be questioned.  Just like food labels, you have to start taking charge of your own health and what we you on and inside your body.  The skin is our first natural line of defence and toxic ingredients are absorbed into the skin. Do your research!
